Over the past ten years a diverse group of architects, landscape architects, and artists have been undertaking groundbreaking projects that in various ways propose an integration of landscape and architecture. Authors Diana Balmori and Joel Sanders, themselves designers who practice at the intersection of the two fields, bring together a collection of inventive landscape works by cutting-edge designers. Three converging design directions--topography, land art, and ecology--unite this otherwise heterogeneous ground. Topographic projects, often created by designers who focus on a digital practice, embrace the biological principle of morphogenesis, using the computer's potential to generate unprecedented forms and patterns that emulate the diversity and complexities of biological processes. Projects in the land art section are driven by immutable natural principles, not superfluous and arbitrary formal preferences, yet nevertheless reveal the imprint of human inhabitants. Ecology-based projects look at sustainable design not as a product but as a technique, generating forms that allow people, buildings, and landscapes to interact with one another in eco-friendly environments. The practitioners profiled--nationally and internationally renowned designers such as Peter Eisenman, West 8, Weiss/Manfredi, Maya Lin, Ken Smith, Olafur Eliasson, Andy Goldsworthy, Kathryn Gustafson, and James Corner--all share an interest in dissolving traditional distinctions between building and environment. Projects range from small-scale private gardens to public green spaces to enormous regional parks.
